Karate can be described as martial art, or fighting method, involving a variety of techniques, including blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations. Karate practice is divided into three aspects: kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

The word Karate is a combination of two Japanese characters: kara, meaning empty, and te , meaning hand; thus, Karate means “empty hand.” Adding the suffix “-do” (pronounced “doe”), meaning “way,” i.e., karate-do, implies karate as a total way of life that goes well beyond the self-defense applications. In traditional Karate-Do, we always keep in mind that the true opponent is oneself.

Here at the Dragon Bushido Dojo and Throwdown of Idaho we are fortunate enough to be able to train our students in two forms of Karate. We offer training in traditional Shorei-Ryu Karate and Xtreme Karate (XMA) forms. The two forms vary in style, however both complement each other. We teach traditional forms in order to bring the rich history of Karate into the American Dojo. XMA is there for students seeking the newer, and flashier styles that Karate has to offer.

Each phase of your training aids the next. Learning katas will strengthen your mind and body by teaching techniques, that you will later use in kumite training, through fluid movements. The kumite training will increase your reflex times as well as teach you to defend, attack, and evade hostile advances. Each part of your Karate training will aid in increasing your physical/mental health, stamina, coordination, balance, confidence, and mental toughness. The transition from one phase to the next will seem natural, even for the beginner.

Anyone may participate in Karate. We teach students of all sizes, ages, and physical abilities. We offer four categories of training. For the young ones (4 to 7 years old) we have Little Dragon classes. For children (8-10 years old) we have K-1 classes. For young teens (11-14) there is K-2 classes. For 15 years of age and up we have K-3 classes. Each category of training is specifically geared for that age/skill group and allows us to modify the curriculum to suit the needs of the students.
